Oscar Chaddesley Win-2

Pointing season starts well

The 2020-21 point to point season could hardly have got off to a beeter start with both our runners to date winning their respective races.

Inchcolm {Maroon Colours) went to Chaddesley Corbett on Sunday December 6th for a 13 runner Veterans (9 and over) race. He was in the first three throughout the race and and jumped superbly with ears pricked. He had a ding dong battle with Chase Me with the jusdge unable to separate them on the line and calling a Dead Heat.

Our new horse for this season, Vinnie Lewis made the long 400 mile round trip to Alnwick on Sunday 13th to run in what looked like a very competitve Mens Open race with 11 runners. With Inchcolm having won the previous week, we were confident that Vinnie would be fit. George  (Chatterton) had him in the front rank from the start and with 5 fences to go made his move and gradually went further and further clear from his toiling rivals, eventually crossing the line 20 lengths ahead in what was also the fastest time of the day.

Two fantastic performances and a great way to start the season !

NH Breaker

Backing NH Youngsters

Backing and riding away 3 NH Bred Youngsters

With all racing and point to pointing cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic we were very pleased to be asked to start off three beautifully bred young potential National Hunt racehorses.

Due to the constrictions of Lockdown, their owner was unable to come to the yard and see the horses progress, so I put together a series of videos to chart their development.

We started by introducing them to a roller and lungeing..

Followed by getting them used to a saddle and introducing long reining… Whilst leaning over and sitting on them in the stable…

By week three we are going further afield with the long reining as well as getting them used to walking over poles and on varying terrain…

After a month they are able to be ridden away and with the benefit of a lead from 12 time winner L’Eldorado (now 15) we get them cantering for a circuit of the all weather track (500m) on both reins. It is now time for them to go back out to grass to grow and develop. We will get them back in for the next stage of their education in about six months time.

Long Reining Videos

Instructional Videos from Equine Athletes

With all equine activities and competitions curtailed thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak, we have spent some time putting together three instructional videos on the important topic of Long Reining.

Long reining is not only important when breaking in youngsters but is also a very useful tool to improve balance and co-ordination in horses and ponies.  Also by using different surfaces can increase proprioception.

Stop-Start Harvest 2017

By the time this news post has been completed, we should have about 50 % of this years harvest safely in the store. It has been a tricky harvest so far for the contractors as the unsettled spell of weather that we currently find ourselves in makes it difficult to press on. The positive thing to note about this years harvest is that yields are considerably better than last year, at least for the two crops combined so far, oilseed rape and winter barley. Both crops will need a bit of expenditure to get them down to the required 15% moisture level but I would rather have the crop safely in the shed than holding out for a prolonged dry spell !

CEGB Ropsley

Clemmie at Ropsley ODE

Clemmie had her first ever rides in a full one day event on Sunday at Ropsley. She finished 3rd on Misty and (dispite a rather unpredictable Dressage !) 5th on Pixie.

Below is a short video compilation of some of the jumping phases…

Newtons Drain

Let the Land Drains flow !

The subject of land drains is probably not the most inspiring topic to base a news article on but at least we appear to have been, at least partially successful in re-claiming some farmland lost to water-logging over the last 15 years or so.

Gradually over the years a dip in a 50 acre field adjacent to the A1 has become more or less impossible to get through, even with the most powerful 4 x 4 tractors, thus wasting probably about 2-3 acres of valuable arable land that we are still paying rent on but obviously getting no return. Recently we decided to investigate and found several areas where the old land drains had become blocked and damaged , stopping any rain water escaping into the large culvert by the side of the A1. We replaced over 200 metres of pipe with modern plastic 10cm drainage piping and left the end flowing into the culvert, just above where the original pipes went in.

The results have been spectacular, there is now a constant and fairly strong flow of water (see video below) off the field and as a result the soil is already becoming much drier and soon, it should be able to bear the weight of farm machinery and be brought back into food production. The interesting, and slightly perplexing issue is that the water coming off the land is absolutely gin clear, normally you would expect a bit of colouring from the soil. Samples have been sent away for testing to establish whether or not it is actually mains water from a local burst that has happened deep underground and gone un-reported. Watch this space….
